It’s the beginning of the New Year and, now that Winter Break and Christmas vacation is over, we are all starting to reflect about our New Year resolutions and wondering what exciting opportunities the upcoming year will hold.
2013 Outlook: What can we expect? It is a legitimate question; let’s see if there is a legitimate answer.
First of all, nobody can predict the future. Many have tried, and all have failed (so far!)
Until just a few years ago, Management scientists thought that they had successfully predicted the business market outlook by using their decision-making models loaded with fancy mathematics: probabilistic models, distribution density, Markov chains, and stochastic equations.
However, over the last 5 years, so many unforeseen variables and fundamental paradigm shifts have occurred (the great recession, the Arab Spring, the Eurozone meltdown, etc.) which could not have been accounted for in advance. This has perhaps triggered society to become less presumptuous, and opened the way for humility to make its come-back. Lately, society seems to be less influenced by ‘hard’ science, and much more inclined to the flexibility of the Arts.
Is the past a good predictor? History never repeats itself. Some patterns may seem similar, like ‘déjà vu’; but History does not give us a ready-made solution. Stories of Attila, Genghis Khan, or Bartolommeo Diaz will not really facilitate the development of your 2013 Business plan.
This is the reason we tend to promote the concept of ‘preparation’ and ‘adaptability’. Paris School of Business combines theory and practice when training our students so that they are equipped to adjust to the ever-changing conditions of the marketplace.
