A Semester at Monash University: Sarah Cordovado’s International Experience

.

Studying abroad for a semester is much more than an academic experience — it’s a human, cultural, and personal adventure.
A student in the Programme Grande École at Paris School of Business, Sarah Cordovado chose to live this experience at Monash University, one of the most prestigious universities in Australia.
Having lived in Melbourne for several months, she shares with us her journey, how she integrated into campus life, the differences she noticed with the French education system, and everything this immersion has brought her — both academically and personally.

Background and Choice of Destination

Can you introduce yourself and tell us which program you’re studying in at Paris School of Business?

My name is Sarah Cordovado, I’m 20 years old and I’m currently studying in the Programme Grande École, international track — so 100% in English — at Paris School of Business. I’ve always wanted to live an international experience during my studies, so as soon as I had the opportunity to go on exchange, I went for it!

Why did you choose to study abroad at Monash University in Australia?

I chose Monash University because I’d dreamed of discovering Australia for a long time, and Monash is one of the most highly regarded universities in the country (35th in the world). The campus, academic reputation, and quality of life in Melbourne really convinced me. It’s also such a vibrant city — open-minded, full of amazing landscapes, and incredibly diverse — exactly what I was looking for in an international experience.

Campus Life and Integration

How has your integration been on campus and with other students?

It went really well! From the very first days, the university organized plenty of activities for international students, which helped me meet people from all around the world very quickly.
On campus, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. There’s always something going on: student club events, presentations, even city tours to help us get to know Melbourne better.
And people here are so open-minded and welcoming that you feel at home in no time.

How are classes organized at Monash University? What differences do you notice compared to Paris School of Business?

In class, there’s a lot of interaction — we discuss, debate, and work on case studies. It’s not a traditional lecture format where you just sit and listen. Professors are very approachable and encouraging, so we participate a lot, and it makes the classes very engaging. There’s also a lot of group work, which helps build connections and makes sessions more dynamic.

Another difference: since we choose our own units, we don’t have the same classmates in every class, so we’re constantly meeting new people.
And a fun little detail I love: here, we write directly on the tables during group activities! It’s surprising at first, but it’s fun and creates a great atmosphere.

The facilities are also amazing: the classrooms are modern and bright, and the library is stunning. I spend a lot of time there — it’s huge and such a pleasant place to study. And when the weather’s nice, you can even study outside, in the sun, on the lawns or terraces around campus. It’s so enjoyable that it doesn’t even feel like work anymore.

Can you tell us about a class or project that particularly stood out to you since your arrival?

I had a really interesting project in a leadership course. We had to reflect on our personal journeys to understand how our leadership skills developed over time.
The idea was to analyze events — both positive and negative — that shaped us, and see how they influenced our way of managing others or making decisions.
It was a true introspection exercise: I had to look inward, think about how I’ve evolved since childhood, and identify what had changed. I chose to present it as a journal, including my reflections, memories, and learnings.
It was original and incredibly rewarding — it helped me better understand myself and become aware of my strengths and weaknesses.

Personal and Academic Growth

What has this exchange brought you academically and personally?

Academically, I’ve gained a lot in autonomy and discipline. Here, everything relies heavily on individual preparation and participation, so I’ve learned to manage my time better and be more proactive.
On a personal level, it’s been a real transformation. Going alone to the other side of the world is a real challenge — it forces you to step out of your comfort zone, adapt, open up to others, and discover what you’re truly capable of. I feel much more independent and confident than before.
I’ve also been lucky enough to travel around Australia and to neighboring countries, meet incredible people, and I’m very grateful for that. This semester will stay with me forever. It’s truly an experience that helped me grow, and I would recommend it 100%.

What have you learned about Australian culture since you arrived?

I discovered a very relaxed and kind culture. Australians have a laid-back lifestyle; they really enjoy the present moment and love outdoor activities.
They also have a strong sense of respect — for people, nature, and the many cultures that coexist here. And there’s that “good vibes only” spirit everywhere: in cafés, markets, concerts… you can really feel that people enjoy simple living.

I loved the Australians’ kindness, the relaxed pace of life, the amazing people I met, and especially the incredible places I visited — not to mention the beach only 35 minutes from downtown! Personally, I love traveling, and here I’ve been able to explore breathtaking landscapes and discover new cultures in neighboring countries.
What I find magical is this constant feeling of freedom: the sunshine, nature everywhere, smiling people, cafés on every corner… In Melbourne, you can spend your morning studying, your afternoon at the beach, and your evening on a rooftop overlooking the skyline. It’s a city where every day can turn into an adventure — and I think that’s why so many students love coming to Australia for their exchange!

What would you say to Paris School of Business students who are hesitant about going on an exchange program?

I’d tell them: go for it, without a second thought!
It’s an experience that truly changes you — personally and professionally. You discover a new way of learning, a new culture, and most importantly, you learn so much about yourself.
Even if it seems a bit scary at first, you’ll never regret it. Yes, it’s a big leap, but it’s also one of the best experiences of your studies and your life!
And if you’re drawn to Australia, don’t overthink it — it’s an incredible, safe, and opportunity-filled destination. It really is a dream place to study abroad. You live at your own pace, meet people from all over the world, and every day brings a new adventure. Go for it — and make the most of it, because it goes by so fast!
