Useful links

Below are some useful websites to help you find accommodation: studio flats or shared apartments, offers that match your needs!

Different types of accommodation in Paris

Private student halls of residence

Generally, these halls offer studio flats equipped with a kitchen and private individual bathroom, and offer a range of additional services, some of which you will have to pay extra for.

ADVANTAGES
  • This option is of interest if you want to find accommodation quickly. Some halls of residence even offer an online reservation service.
  • Accommodation in private halls of residence is eligible for financial aid from the CAF.
  • You will have your own individual studio flat.
  • The head of the hall is residence is available on site to answer all your questions.

University halls of residence

University halls of residence offer bedrooms or studio flats with varying amounts of communal areas depending on the type of accommodation.

ADVANTAGES
  • Moderate rent: public halls of residence offer the lowest rents on the market (from 400 euros for a bedroom to 600 euros for a studio flat).
DISADVANTAGES
  • Additional services such as laundry, kitchen equipment or linen may come at an extra cost.
DISADVANTAGES
  • Due to the low rates, demand is very high and very few bedrooms are available.
  • Studio flats/bedrooms are not equipped with bedding or kitchen utensils.
  • You must set up your accommodation request file as far in advance as possible for university halls of residence.
  • Be prepared to share living areas and respect your neighbors (no noise after 10pm, etc.).
  • The majority of studio flats are in fact individual bedrooms offering a minimum of comfort and surface area (9m²), plus you will probably have to share a kitchen.

Flat share apartment

The chance of making new acquaintances is without a doubt one of the main reasons to flat share.

ADVANTAGES
  • Lower rent and charges (average rent from 550 to 750 euros per person, including charges).
  • You will not be living alone: no more Sunday blues, as your flat mates will be there to keep spirits up.
  • You will meet other students who will introduce to life in Paris.
  • You can live in a larger apartment.

Studio flats

A studio flat offers you the chance of having your own apartment in Paris. Rent varies from 700 to 100 euros depending on the location of the property.

ADVANTAGES
  • Individual accommodation.
  • Individual kitchen and bathroom within a studio flat.
DISADVANTAGES
  • Some bedrooms may be undeclared sub-lets, meaning you will not be eligible for any subsidies from the CAF.
  • Sharing a flat also means making concessions and respecting rules.
  • Students have a reputation for partying, so some landlords are reluctant to rent their apartments to them.
DISADVANTAGES
  • Relatively small surface area.
  • You may feel isolated if you are not used to living on your own.
  • If you want to benefit from financial aid from the CAF, make sure that the owner of the property has registered the studio as an apartment.

Attic rooms

Located in historic buildings, attic rooms are individual bedrooms where female members of staff working for well-off families would live.

ADVANTAGES
  • Top-floor location, with fine views over Paris.
  • Individual accommodation often located within historic buildings in well-to-do districts of Paris.
  • Relatively low rent (550 to 600 euros depending on the location).

Inter-generational accommodation

If you are fluent in French, why not live with an aged person and share their daily life?

ADVANTAGES
  • A wonderful human experience and the opportunity to meet other Parisians.
  • Low/free rent.
  • Company during the good and bad times.
DISADVANTAGES
  • Very small surface area (the smallest available on the market).
  • Often there will be no lift access as the rooms are located within old buildings.
  • The possibility of shared toilets and bathroom and very basic kitchen equipment.

Living in an attic room may appear “so Parisian” but in actual fact it is not necessarily the most desirable choice of accommodation in Paris.

DISADVANTAGES
  • You will have to respect your host’s rules and many not be able to invite other people over.
  • A commitment: the person with whom you will live will be counting on you.
  • You will have to go through a screening process to be accepted.

Hotel-apartment

A good option if you a looking for a place to live up until you find long-term accommodation: renting a room in a hotel-apartment.

ADVANTAGES
  • You can stay for a short or long period of time.
  • Hotel-apartments generally have high security and surveillance standards.
  • Hotel-apartments offer a number of services (fitness area, cleaning service, laundry, free breakfast etc.).
  • You can set up in a private studio flat (16 to 30m²).
DISADVANTAGES
  • You will have to pay administration fees (the amount of which depends on the size of the apartment in which you will be accommodated).
  • Higher rates than the majority of other options.
