New Practices for Innovation and Creativity (newPIC)

Chair Co-Directors: Valérie Mérindol - David W. Versailles

Founded in 2014, the newPIC Chair examines new models of innovation such as open labs, collaborative spaces, coworking spaces and makerspaces, particularly in sectors such as cosmetics, aeronautics, space and defense. She studies the micro-foundations of innovation and creativity, from the emergence of new ideas to their appropriation, covering all value-creation processes. It contributes to research projects and provides expertise and support to private and public players in the evolution of innovation and creativity processes.

The aim of the Chair is to put into perspective the specificities of each context, territory or business sector, in order to identify the singularities of the innovation process, best practices and business models. It is developing three areas of activity:

  • organizing Master's-level conferences and seminars for PSB students;
  • implementation of research projects (action research) and organization of focus groups commissioned by industry and institutional public bodies;
  • disseminating research results in academic networks (symposia, publications in journals and books), institutional networks (white papers and research monographs) and industrial networks (blogs and newsletters for industry and the general public).

The Chair contributes to European research projects focused on topics such as the socio-economic impact of remote work, sustainability, collaborative spaces, and social entrepreneurship (REMAKING, CORAL, Cowork4EU).

Academic partners:

  • The Chair collaborates with BETA (CNRS and Université de Strasbourg) and MOSAIC (HEC Montréal) to develop research projects on creativity and innovation, and in direct interaction with the creativity network based in Montréal, Barcelona and Strasbourg.

Institutional and industrial partners:

  • The newPIC Chair develops close interactions and partnerships with socio-economic players such as multinationals (Thales, Seb, Air Liquide....), research organizations such as CEA, and key national bodies such as Bpifrance le lab and ANRT / FutuRIS.
  • Its cooperation with Bpifrance Deeptech resulted in the publication of the report “Renforcer la troisième mission de l’université pour l’innovation technologique et la deeptech” (Strengthening the university's third mission for technological innovation and deeptech) in 2021. (http://www.newpic.fr/newpicopendoc/newpic-deeptech-whitebook-2021-full-… )
  • Supported by the Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics Department (DREES) of the French Ministry of Solidarity and Health, the Chair published the report “La protection sociale dans les espaces de l’économie collaborative” (Social protection in collaborative economy spaces) in 2021  ( http://www.newpic.fr/newpicopendoc/drees-rapport-hbs-2021.pdf
  • In collaboration with the CEA (Center for Atomic Energy and New Energies), the newPIC Chair is conducting a research project on the relationship between art, science and socio-economic players for the development of sustainable innovations.
  • In Fall 2024, the NewPIC Chair has released a new White Paper, titled, Strategic perspectives for a deeptech-oriented open innovation lab. Commissioned by the CEA's Technological Research Division, the White paper examines the Y.SPOT open innovation center, located in Grenoble and established by the CEA. This White Paper aims to stimulate collective reflection on the operations of innovation communities while enhancing Y.SPOT’s relevance and leadership in the field of Open Innovation, preparing for and inventing the future. http://www.newpic.fr/02proj2023yspot.html#downloads
