When Facebook and smartphones are unwanted…at least by one individual…
The objective of this field trip was to get students off their beloved virtual “hook” inside the classroom and instead experience a taste of real life in all its confusing unpredictability. Students had to travel by metro (but this time not on a google map !!!) to the 7th arrondissement in order to participate in a rallye, which would make them discover first-hand sustainable and unsustainable products and labels.
Cosmetics, textile, food and multinationals were the sectors which they had to investigate. Lo and behold: No more typing of questions into mute search engines, but meeting face-to-face with sales staff and customers was required. Being glued to inoffensive computer screens and other digital gadgets might lead us to forget that there is also the possibility to explore the tumultuousness of life while communicating with others. This time encounters were “physical” and not in a chat room.
