Can you tell us who you are and present your university? 

I am Rena Polat Korkmaz, Team Leader for Partnership Development and International Exchange Programs.  

Koç University (KU) was founded in 1993 as a non-profit private university in Istanbul, Türkiye. Since its establishment, Koç University has become one of the leading universities in Türkiye, distinguished by notable contributions to the elevation of education, knowledge and service both domestically and beyond. KU’s commitment to excellence and its well-resourced programs attract world-class academicians. The university’s faculty consists of Türkiye’s most established senior researchers and PhD’s from elite research institutions worldwide. Most of our full-time faculty members have doctoral degrees from top-tier universities in the world.

Why did you establish a partnership with Paris School of Business? 

As Koç University, we established a partnership with Paris School of Business to enhance international academic collaboration, provide our students with global learning opportunities, and strengthen research ties between our institutions. Paris School of Business is recognized for its excellence in business education and strong industry connections, making it an ideal partner for student exchange programs, joint research initiatives, and dual-degree opportunities. 

This collaboration aligns with our commitment to fostering cross-cultural engagement and equipping our students with the skills and global perspective needed to excel in an increasingly interconnected world. How many international students do you welcome each year? Where do they come from?

Each year we host around 350 exchange students from approximately 60 different countries. 

Support and campus life for international students 

How do you support international students upon their arrival and throughout their exchange at your university? 

At Koç University, we prioritize the well-being and success of our international/exchange students by providing a range of support services before, during, and after their arrival. Here are the key ways we support them throughout their time with us: 

  • Accommodation Assistance: We help international students secure housing on campus or offer an Off-Campus Housing Guide document to help them fina comfortable and safe place to live.
  • Welcome Packages: Upon acceptance, international students receive information about life at Koç University, including practical tips on navigating Istanbul, understanding local customs, and preparing for their stay.
  • Visa and Immigration Assistance: The International Community Services Office provides detailed guidance on visa applications, required documents, and any necessary steps to ensure that students can smoothly obtain their student visas.
  • Our International Student OrientationWeek takes place before the start of each semester. This orientation introduces students to Koç University’s academic system, student services, and cultural activities. It also provides essential information about life in Istanbul, helping students get used to their new environment.
  • Students are also paired with Mentor Students, where they are assigned a local student who helps them with their transition by answering questions and providing practical support.
  • We organize cultural events, trips, and activities that allow international students to immerse themselves in Turkish culture, while also providing spaces for them to meet other international and local students.
  • To ensure an enriching and rewarding academic and campus life, the Diversity, Inclusion and Disabled Student Coordination Unit works with students with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits or restricts their participation in, and contribution to any programs offered at Koç University. This Unit also allows every student with differences such as gender, religion, language, disability and socio-cultural characteristics to participate equally in university life.
  • KURES accompanies students in their process of coming to know and realizing themselves, and supporting their personal development. It aims to help students acquire the knowledge and skills that will help them cope with the academic, social and personal problems they face throughout this process.
  • Career Development Center, students can consult with our career counselors at all stages of their career planning and development. Some topics they advise on: Personality/Interest Inventories and Career-Oriented Interpretation, General Career Counseling, Planning for Masters and PhD Process, Review of Curriculum Vitae, Cover Letter and Statement of Purpose, Interview Preparation, Walk-In Meetings for Quick Questions. 

What types of courses will the students take during their exchange at your university?

At Koç University, we provide students with the freedom to take courses from any programs regardless of their major as long as it is also approved by the home university, the course instructor and there’s capacity. They may find the previous Course Lists here.

Are there any cultural activities or events designed to enrich the experience of international students at your university? 

Koç University offers a wide variety of cultural activities and events specifically designed to enrich the experience of international students and foster a deeper understanding of Turkish culture, as well as a sense of community among students from different backgrounds. Here are some of the key cultural activities and events we organize: 

  • Turkish Hospitality Experience Program : Turkish Hospitality Experience Program brings exchange students together with Koç University students’ and staffs’ families to give exchange students a unique experience of Turkish culture and hospitality while helping them integrate to life in Türkiye. There are wide range of opportunities from visiting a Turkish family for a family meal, dinner, spending weekends, etc. Interested students can consult with their Incoming Exchange Students advisor upon their admission. The announcement will be sent out to the KU email addresses of exchange students. 
  • Turkish Coffee Hour (TPH) : This is a weekly conversation club led by Turkish-speaking KU volunteers (student, staff, faculty member) for Koç University members and their families who want to practice conversational 
    Turkish in an informal setting. There are two online sessions each week; one for beginners and one for advanced. Those Koç University members can easily participate in the club by subscribing to the mailing list and joining the WhatsApp group. No sign up is required.

Living in Türkiye and study abroad tips 

What will our students discover when coming to your country/city? 

Istanbul is a city like no other, straddling both Europe and Asia, offering the chance to experience two continents in one location. Students will discover a city where East meets West—this dynamic mix of cultures, traditions, and architecture creates an intriguing atmosphere that is unlike anywhere else in the world. 

  • Historical Landmarks: Istanbul is home to some of the most iconic historical sites, including the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, and Basilica Cistern. Students will get to explore centuries of history, from the Byzantine and Ottoman empires to the modern Republic of Turkey.
  • Museums and Art Galleries: The city offers a wealth of museums, such as the Istanbul Archaeology Museums, Pera Museum, and Istanbul Modern Art Museum, where students can dive into the region's rich artistic and cultural history. 
  • Festivals and Celebrations: Students will discover a vibrant calendar of festivals throughout the year, including Ramadan, Eid, New Year's Eve, and cultural festivals such as Istanbul Film Festival or the Istanbul Music Festival. These events give them the chance to engage with local customs and traditions while celebrating global diversity. 

Vibrant City Life: While Istanbul is steeped in history, it’s also a bustling, modern city with a youthful, cosmopolitan vibe. Students will discover a city with trendy cafes, fashion-forward shopping streets, and lively nightlife. Areas like Taksim Square, Istiklal Street, and Kadıköy offer a mix of arts, shopping, and entertainment. 

University Life in Istanbul: Istanbul is home to some of Turkey’s top universities, including Koç University, which attracts students from all over the world. The city has a vibrant student life, with plenty of opportunities for socializing, networking, and academic collaboration. Students will find that Istanbul offers a great blend of culture, education, and career opportunities. 

Exploring Turkey: Istanbul is an excellent base for exploring other parts of Turkey, from the stunning Cappadocia (with its fairy chimneys and hot air balloons) to the white travertine terraces of Pamukkale, and the ancient ruins of Ephesus. Students can easily take weekend trips to experience Turkey’s diverse landscapes and historical sites. 

What advice would you give to a student who is hesitant about studying abroad?

Studying abroad in Istanbul is a unique opportunity to experience a city where East meets West, offering rich cultural and academic experiences. While initial hesitation is natural, researching the city, connecting with other international students, and learning basic Turkish can ease the transition. Istanbul is generally safe, has an affordable cost of living, and offers world-class universities with global connections, making it a great choice for academic and career growth. The city's vibrant atmosphere, incredible food, and historical landmarks provide endless opportunities for exploration, ensuring an unforgettable study abroad experience.
