Following from the Introduction to Microfinance previously presented by Dr Ashta, he will this time be looking at the topic from a different view point.
Microfinance is a fast growing sector hailed as a development tool to provide responsibility to poor people to get out of misery. At the same time its high profitability often brings it in the media eye, for its high interest rates, suicides and ethics. What exactly is the debate all about? The presentation will provide a brief introduction and open up the floor for debate on the following issues:
 What is the social innovation aspect of lending to the poor?
How can the industry be situated within its network of stakeholders?
How high are interest rates?
Does this really lead to suicides? What are the factors of stress?
What role is technology providing?
What are researchers looking at?
Where role can cost and management accountants play in this sector?
About the Speaker
Dr. Arvind Ashta holds the Banque Populaire Chair in Microfinance at the Burgundy School of Business (Groupe ESC Dijon-Bourgogne), France. He offers courses in Microfinance and researches institutional aspects of Microfinance and advanced technology in Microfinance. He has taught Microfinance as visiting faculty in Chicago (US), Pforzheim (Germany) and Brussels (Belgium). He has edited a book on Advanced Technologies for Microfinance. He has a number of publications in international journals and guest edits special editions of various journals devoted to microfinance. He is on the editorial review board of Cost Management, Strategic Change: Briefings in Entrepreneurial Finance and International Journal for Technology and Human Interaction.
The presentation will be followed by an aperitif.
